PLN Collaborates with GD Power and ACWA on the Development of Floating Solar Plants in Indonesia – ASEAN’s Second Largest Floating Solar
Indonesia’s state electricity company, PT. PLN has collaborated with Hong Kong-based energy company, GD Power to develop floating solar power plant (PLTS) in Karangkates, East Java, Indonesia. Both companies have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to develop the Karangkates Floating Solar Power Plant with the capacity of 129-Megawatt peak (MWp).
PLN’s President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, highlighted the significance of this collaboration in advancing the green energy initiatives in Indonesia. Quoted from Darmawan, “this project is not just about supplying clean energy but also maintaining economic growth momentum, creating more jobs, reducing poverty, and enhancing community welfare.”
With the capacity of 129 MWp, the Karangkates Floating Solar Power Plant is projected to produce up to 219 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually – Potentially become ASEAN’s second largest floating solar power plant after Cirata Floating Solar. The clean electricity from the Karangkates Floating Solar will cater to the energy needs of Java Island, particularly East Java. This floating solar project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 180,000 tons of CO2 per year.
Following Karangkates project, PT. PLN also has officially collaborated with Arab Saudi-based energy company, ACWA Power to develop floating solar power plant in Saguling, West Java, Indonesia. The collaboration will have PT. PLN to own 51% of the shares, while the remaining owned by ACWA Power. The Saguling Floating Solar Power Plant will be constructed at Saguling reservoir and have the capacity of 92 MWp. This floating solar project has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 120,000 tons of CO2 per year.
